Renewals, Expiry, and Transferring Out

Domains renew automatically so an expiry never takes your site and email down. When you want a domain to lapse, or to move it to another registrar, there is a specific procedure for each. Domains are not cancelled through a cancellation request and are not refundable, so the order of operations matters.

Renewals#

Each domain has its own expiry date and renews for a year (or the term you choose) ahead of it, charged to your default payment method under the usual automatic renewal rules. To renew early or for several years, open the domain in MyNobull (Domains, then My Domains) and choose Renew; multi-year renewals are a cheap way to never think about it again.

Let a domain expire#

1. Open the domain and turn Auto Renew off. This is the only way to stop a domain renewing; a service cancellation request does not apply to domains.
2. Move anything still using it. Email, subdomains, and any TLS certificates on that name stop working at expiry.
3. Let the date pass. Most TLDs then enter a grace period during which the domain can still be renewed (sometimes at a redemption fee set by the registry), followed by deletion and public re-availability. If you change your mind, renew as early as possible; redemption pricing is not ours and not small.

Transfer a domain out#

You are free to move a domain to another registrar at any time after the first 60 days of registration or a previous transfer (a registry rule). The receiving registrar drives the process; your side is:

1. Turn off Registrar Lock on the domain's overview in MyNobull.
2. Turn off ID Protection if the receiving registrar's approval emails need to reach your real registrant address, and confirm that address is one you read.
3. Get the EPP code (also called the authorization or transfer code) from the domain's menu; it is emailed to the registrant address.
4. Start the transfer at the new registrar and give it the code. Approve the confirmation email when it arrives.
5. Watch it complete, typically within a few hours to five days. Once done, the domain disappears from MyNobull, and DNS keeps working only if the new registrar has your records or you left nameservers pointing at a host that still does. See Change Nameservers.
